Gaining a PPL gives you access to the skies! With a PPL you are a fully qualified pilot, giving you the
ability to fly solo and take friends and family for flights around the country. If you’re looking to start your career in aviation the private pilot’s license is the first step.
So what’s involved?
Becoming a pilot involves taking flying lessons to get practical experience and passing written theory exams.
The practical experience consists of at least 50 hours of flying. This includes 15 hours flying solo with an instructor supervising from the ground, Terrain and weather awareness and 10 hours cross-country training.
The Theory consists of passing 6 theory exams – Flight radio, Navigation, Aviation law, Human factors, Aircraft technical knowledge and Meteorology. Each exam can be self-studied or an Aero Club instructor can assist with tutoring/classes.
Anyone can start working on their pilots training no matter their age, although in order to fly solo the
student must be of at least 16 years of age with a class 2 or DL9 medical.
In order to be eligible to sit a PPL flight test the student must be 17
years old with a class 2 or DL9 medical
